Why Grading Matters Before Any Landscaping Project

LC

Grading is the least glamorous part of any outdoor project — but it’s arguably the most important. Proper grading establishes the foundation that every other element of your landscape depends on. Skip it, and you’ll deal with problems that are expensive and disruptive to fix later.

The primary purpose of grading is drainage management. Water needs to flow away from your home’s foundation, not toward it. A minimum slope of 1 inch per foot for the first 6 feet from the foundation is the standard recommendation. Without this slope, water pools against the foundation, enters basements, and causes structural damage over time.

Grading also affects lawn health. Low spots in a yard collect water, creating soggy areas where grass struggles and mosquitoes breed. High spots dry out faster and are prone to thin, stressed turf. A properly graded yard distributes water evenly and drains efficiently.

For hardscape installations, grading determines whether your patio, walkway, or retaining wall performs correctly. Pavers installed on poorly graded ground will shift, settle unevenly, and develop tripping hazards. Retaining walls built without proper assessment of the slope and soil conditions can fail catastrophically.

New construction properties often have the most significant grading needs. Builder grading typically addresses only the minimum code requirements and leaves the rest of the lot rough and unfinished. Professional finish grading prepares the entire property for lawn installation, planting, and drainage.

LC & Son evaluates grading needs before every project. Whether you’re installing a new lawn, building a patio, or fixing drainage problems, we make sure the grade is right before any other work begins.
